“ARE YOU going to tell me what this emergency meeting is about?” William persisted, close at Tal’s heels. “I can’t think how I’ll be of any use otherwise, sir.” He made a point of including the formality, and he wondered at his own vengefulness.
“I think you are forgetting something, Will.” Taliesin’s features seemed unusually sharp today, even for him, and he stopped walking.
Ah yes, William grumbled inwardly. I’m not important enough to contribute. A mere apprentice, with no knowledge of the college’s inner workings. It stung more than it should have; he hadn’t even been invited to meetings in Yvenne. None outside of his cramped department, anyway.
Maybe it was the fact that Tal was pretending he hadn’t fucked him on his desk two weeks ago, or that soft, repentant voice that repeated in his head, A terrible idea. Even more infuriating was the image of that bottle tucked away in a desk drawer, always at hand. In case more terrible ideas come to him, William surmised, with a heightened bitterness that was his new normal.
A group of men and women in robes came upon them, some hastening on and others stopping to exchange deep nods with Archmage Karsus. William bowed, then bowed again, until it seemed most of them had gone on.
Except one hadn’t.
A man in white robes stood by Taliesin, speaking in low tones. He had rich auburn hair that was tied in a low tail, which at the moment peeked over one shoulder teasingly. The shoulder was not bad-looking, either, even under robes. The man must have caught him looking, because intelligent eyes flickered to him, a small quirk of the man’s full lips showing he had noticed the attention. Then the man’s focus returned to his conversation.
An unwanted, unanticipated heat grew on William’s cheeks.
Rowan Myrdin. I’d bet my life on it.
He concentrated hard on schooling his expression to a more professional one, and in doing so he must have missed something. The next moment, the man in the white robes turned to face him fully.
“Rowan Myrdin,” said the man, and gave him a shallow nod. “I teach in the vorsomancy department.”
“William Yderis,” said William, surprised his voice was steady. “I assist Archmage Karsus.”
Professor Myrdin’s eyes—which he saw now were a deep blue—held some hidden amusement as he glanced back at the archmage. “About time. Ever since the last one left, he’s been impossible to deal with.”
All of this was said with an airy confidence that bordered on arrogance, a voice full of provocation. Something about Myrdin’s voice spoke of velvet and dark rooms, and despite how his words should have alarmed William, he could only nod along.
Why am I agreeing with him? Giving himself a mental shake, he returned to the present.
“The archmage has far too much work for one man,” William said smoothly, his heart beating fast and his professionalism a struggle to maintain. “I, for one, consider it a welcome challenge to assist him in his work.”
“Is that so?” Myrdin did not seem convinced, but by the sparkle in his eyes he was humoring him.
